A catalyst is a chemical in a reaction that speeds up or slows down the rate of the reaction (i.e. how fast the reaction is going) without being used up itself. This means that you can sometimes use a very tiny bit of catalyst for an entire reaction, because it gets recycled in the reaction.

It is a substance that speeds up or slows down a reaction without actually being involved in the reaction.
