• Question: what got you into science

      As a kid, I was always wondering how does the world work. It was hard to make sense of it all, until I studied physics and maths and saw that it could explain a lot of things!

      Also, I thought it would impress girls! Haha!

      I still get a kick out of solving an equation, every time. It’s a bit like when you finally reach the next level at a video game, you get a great personal satisfaction, but then you still go on to play some more. It’s never ending!

      I went to Kennedy Space Centre when I was 10, and became really interested in space and astronomy (this is why I wanted to be an astronaut when I was young).

      Then, I fell in love with physics during the leaving cert. The satisfaction I got out of solving problems was amazing, and I started thinking about getting a job where all I do is solve problems.

      Then my physics teacher told me about the Physics & Astrophysics course in UCC, which sounded awesome since it combined 2 things I’m passionate about. So I studied Astrophysics for my degree, and decided to do a PhD to try and solve some of the big problems.

      Hi Cian, I loved biology in school and was pretty good at chemistry. I visited the medical laboratory science department in CIT, really liked it and put it down on my CAO and here I Am! I loved English too and still do so someday I’d like to combine the two…I just haven’t figured out how to yet ?

      I’ve always loved figuring out how things worked, and ever since I was little I’ve wanted to be a scientist of some sort (the first thing I can remember wanting to be was a paleontologist, a scientist who works with dinosaur bones). Then as I worked my way through school, science was always my favourite subject, and when I reached Leaving Cert, I had an amazing chemistry teacher who was really passionate about the subject and made learning about it really fun! I decided to study chemistry in college and haven’t looked back since!
