Not particularly no. I never really enjoyed school, I was never one of the “cool gang” and was never the teachers favourite either (except for my English teacher…she loved me). I did have a few good friends and did pretty well in my leaving cert but college days were definitely “the best days of my life”. I loved college, not just from the studying point of view (in fact not at all from the studying point of view) but I made lifelong friends with people who were like me and crucially interested in the same sort of things as me.

Yes and no. I had some bad years, when I didn’t have many friends, and I found the work load in school hard. But there were also good years, when I had nice people around me, and I found the work interesting.

If you’re not happy, don’t be afraid to talk to someone – your family, your teachers, your friends. Everyone goes through rough patches, and being happy starts with talking about why you’re not happy.

Yes and no! From the point of view of school work, I always enjoyed studying (I was most definitely the class swot), so I liked the aspect where I got to learn new things. However, on the social side of things, it was a little different, and for the first few years, I found it pretty tough, I didn’t have many friends, and the people that I hung around with weren’t particularly nice to me. However, as I got a little further in, I made some better friends that I had more in common with, some of whom I’m still friendly with today!

If you are having a tough time in school, it’s important to chat to someone, your family, your teachers, friends, whoever you feel most comfortable with: problems always seem more manageable when they’re shared, and rough patches don’t last forever, you will get through it!

I was happy to spend time with my friends alright. Then in class it depended very much on the teacher! Also, I wasn’t good at understanding during lessons and I just copied the material mindlessly. Then I had to study it at home which wasn’t very efficient. All the same, I was happy learning about new stuff. I really wanted to understand more and when I did it made me happy. Still does!

      What about you?
